Having grown up in the United States, Rolando credits the American melting pot with showing him the beauty of a diverse community. But it was his own Filipino and Chamorro roots that provided the blueprint for Komunal.

"My Filipino and Chamorro roots taught me how to bring people together, grounding me in the values of respect, unity, hospitality, and humility," Rolando shared. “Our goal is to have everyone on the mat carry their unique culture with us, creating a space where heritage isn't checked at the door.”

Borrowing from the tight-knit island and village mindset, Komunal is built on the philosophy of collective elevation. Just as elders and ancestors pass down language, music, food, and story from generation to generation, knowledge will be passed down on the Komunal mats to seed deep roots in the community.
