Legacy Stands, New Path Begins: Ames-Michael Hoevker Signs with Westcliff University
From the Local Mats to the Next Chapter: Ames-Michael Hoevker Signs with Westcliff University
Every so often, an athlete comes along who completely redefines what is possible with pure determination, heart, and an unstoppable work ethic. If you’ve been following California high school wrestling, you already know the name Ames-Michael Hoevker.
The Granite Hills Eagles standout recently closed an iconic high school chapter, officially announcing his commitment to continue his academic and athletic career at the next level.
The Commitment: Westcliff-Bound ??
After an electric high school run and plenty of anticipation, Ames made it official on social media, announcing his signing with Westcliff University under the leadership of Coach Drell Gist and Coach J. Mart.
Reflecting on the milestone, Ames shared:
"After careful consideration and many conversations I am beyond blessed to announce, My commitment to Westcliff University. I would like to thank Coach @drellgist and @coachjmart for the opportunity to be apart of something special!!! Go warriors ??"
Signing with a rising NAIA powerhouse like Westcliff is a testament to the years of grind Ames has put into the sport—a journey that is even more remarkable when you look at how quickly he rose to the top.
From Freshman Beginner to 2x State Placer
To truly appreciate Ames’ legacy, you have to look at the timeline. While many elite wrestlers start when they are in elementary school, Ames didn't lace up his wrestling shoes until his freshman year of high school.
To go from a day-one beginner as a freshman to a 2x California State Placer is practically unheard of in a state as notoriously brutal and competitive as California. The Golden State doesn't divide divisions by school size; everyone fights through one massive, unforgiving state bracket. Placing at the California State Tournament even once means you are among the prep elite in the nation. Doing it twice requires a rare breed of grit.
Ames looked back on the journey with massive gratitude:
"Well it’s all come to an end for my High school career. Not bad for a kid who started freshman year. I would like to thank everyone who has been apart of my journey, and especially the ones who got me to where I am today you know who you guys are."
Overcoming the Grind
True champions are forged in adversity, and Ames’ senior season was no exception. Battling through a severe, ongoing knee injury that would have sidelined most athletes, he refused to let up. He fought through the pain, punched his ticket back to the state tournament, and stepped onto the podium once again.
"I’m extremely grateful to have even been able to wrestle at state especially because of the ongoing knee injury that I did have during the season and still being able to come and place at state is something special that God put in my path. I’m very blessed and grateful with all that being said All glory to God and onto the next chapter."
The Stats & Accolades ?
Ames leaves behind an elite competitive resume that proves he belongs on the collegiate stage:
• The Launch: Hit an absolute bomb in the Junior Finals at 138 lbs to solidify his reputation as an aggressive, high-amplitude wrestler (#calistrong).
• High School Achievements: Finished his junior season with a stellar 44-7 record, captured a San Diego Section Division 1 Title, won a San Diego Masters Championship (earning the Outstanding Middle Weight Wrestler Award), and took 6th overall at the grueling California State Tournament in Bakersfield.
• The Freestyle/Greco Hammer: Proven success in the off-season, punching tickets to the prestigious USA Wrestling Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota in both styles, alongside All-American finishes at the NHSCA and US Open events.
• Senior Campaign: Transitioned up to 144 lbs for his senior run, stacking up dominant pins and technical falls while securing his second consecutive state podium finish.
A New Path Begins
As one chapter closes, a brand-new legacy begins. Ames summed up the end of his high school era perfectly a few weeks back:
"The battles are over, but their lessons remain. I close this chapter not in anger but in purpose. My legacy stands… and a new path begins.”
With his relentless drive, a proven ability to overcome injury, and a high-flying wrestling style that can break anyone on the mat, the Westcliff Warriors are getting an absolute warrior.
Congratulations, Ames! The community cannot wait to see what you accomplish under the lights in the next chapter. All glory to God and onto the next.
